Twitter And Teens

twitter

Where are they?

(WORLD) Mark and I were discussing recently why Twitter is not popular with young people.

Here’s our take:

  • it’s not feature-rich: sure you can add friends and follow plus DM or reply but apart from the 140 character update option you can’t do anything else (in comparison to other social networking sites young people populate)
  • the service exists: it’s fast been integrated into the aforementioned sites as standard
  • it’s already populated by adults: it’s the same as young people getting into Bowls (even if it was fun it’s already dominated by another generation so not cool by association)

NB: I tweeted the same question out to my network and here’s what @m_as, @innovativeteach, @davestacey, @timdavies, @rohdesign, @ianbetteridge, @c_and_t think.

Guernsey YS Part Two

Film Review.

(GUE) Short film review of our time over in Guernsey delivering our two day social media course to the islands youth service team:

‘The proof of the pudding is in the eating’ as they say and for me the proof of a good training course is in how much the ideas it generates get used afterwards. Since our Mediasnackers training our staff have: had a group of young people using their mobile phones / cameras to record evidence of their work, produced a Capzles presentation on a new project, set up a webcam link on Skype for future staff meetings and discussed using wikis for updating of our database records. With all of this done in less than a week I’d say that pudding has well and truly been eaten!

ABO Conference

A masterclass session.

(WAL) I’m just down the road at the fantastic Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay delivering a 90minutes masterclass session at the Association of British Orchestras Annual Conference.

(My session has the very grand title of “Leading By Example: Digital Delivery”—cool!)

The MediaSnackers session at our recent conference was a universal success and by far and away the most popular and talked about session of the three days. We are already looking at how to use them more and will not only be passing on their tips to members but will be trying to use them ourselves! Extremely well pitched and the amount of ground covered in just 90 minutes was astounding and proof that the little things that can make a big difference do not require great technical know how. Brilliant and we look forward to a continuing relationship. Thanks a million to DK and the team.

Jersey Youth Service Masterclass

jerseymap

Another gig.

(JER) Whilst I’m on the island Jersey Youth Service have invited me in today to deliver a little masterclass for their staff.

Going to be fun as ever.

It felt like we were all blown away at the end of presentation with how much could be done and how far we had to go to get there…but slowly over the last few months people have been using mind mapping tools, using videos and mobile phones, thinking about how can we communicate this to the ‘create’ and ‘connect’ generation. We have a web based survey for all youth service users coming up during May, have set up an YS IT reference group to grapple with how to use all these ‘cool’ tools and are currently working our way through how we can best use social networking sites within the service…so we are still blown away but now we are also inspired!

BT Internal Event Part Two

bt

Quick review.

(GBR) Yesterday we delivered a fun and interactive internal event for BT introducing and exploring the breadth and depth of social media plus providing four masterclass sessions detailing the practical applications of this stuff.

Here’s a video review of the event which was attended by over 100 staff (in person and virtually) across varied departments and global offices:

MediaSnackers delivered thought provoking, highly relevant keynote and master class sessions to a variety of BT staff today. Lots of food for thought for everyone who attended; it will certainly make us look closely at how we engage and interact internally as well as with our customers and suppliers, including what more we can do to engage the youth generation. Highly recommended!

Ria Kearney, BT Corporate Responsibility

There were also some tweets from attendees: Martin Faux tweeted here and here, Ben Scowen tweeted this, Anne Bailey tweeted here plus Ian Betteridge tweeted this and posted a pic here.
