Showco Digital Journalist Intros: Part Four
[SUMMARY—Introducing Amber.]
(GBR) MediaSnackers will be at this years Showcomotion Children's Media Conference training up some young poeple to be digital journalists for the event. Let's meet them:
Hi I'm Amber. I have just finished studying English at Manchester University where I focussed mainly on creative writing and post-colonial literature. I now live in Somerset but would like to move to another new and exciting city soon to pursue a career in the media.
I'm passionate about poetry and how it can be presented in an accessible way. I also love independent films such as, 'In The Mood For Love' and 'The Lives of Others'. Since travelling on my gap year I have developed the travel bug (especially to any Spanish speaking countries) and would like to live in Latin America at some point in my life. I also love earrings especially dangly ones and believe that you can never have too many pairs.
I think that working with MediaSnackers will enhance my understanding of how the media can work with the voice and expression of this generation. It will also give me the opportunity to work as part of a team and learn from new people which is always a valuable and inspiring experience.

Diploma In IT: Launch Event
[SUMMARY—A new qualification for the UK.]
(GBR) MediaSnackers will be speaking at the launch event next Monday of the new Diploma In IT for 14 to 19 years olds in the UK.
Here's gist of the course content:
• Reflect the blend of business, technical, interpersonal and project skills needed in modern IT and Telecoms professional roles;
• Boost students' achievements in education, by providing an inspirational, exciting context for learning which embraces academic theory, practical application and evaluation of experience;
• Boost students' employability, whether directly from the Diploma or after Higher Education, through the use of up to date industry practice and employer-endorsed content;
• Encourage more students into technology-related careers through exciting, appealing content that is equally attractive to both girls and boys.
It's obviously needed—a qualification which reflects the changing needs and expectations of the workplace. We've not had the opportunity to have a look deeper but it looks like the course has been developed from the employers perspective—instead it would have been great to have devised its content from the existing media/technology habits and trends of digital natives and try and formulate a strategy to enable employers to utilise this already developed skills set—a point MediaSnackers will highlight in our little talk :-)

By achieving and taking part in this experience I am hoping to learn how to write for the media and learn what I have to look forward when I enter the media industry.
This is also a good way of working with people who know more about the media and who I can learn from.

The Youth Summit
[SUMMARY—10 year strategies and being provocative.]
(UK) MediaSnackers has been invited (through our friends at Channel 4) to participate in The Youth Summit—a National Youth Agency (NYA) two day conference exploring the Government's ten-year strategy for children and young people.
We'll be facilitating a session with the youth delegates and putting together a short presentation for the whole summit audience at the end of the first day.
I have had experience in my previous role as the UK's first corporate youth officer of working with the NYA. A great organisation with youth participation at it's core. I also have experience of planning at a corporate level and putting together strategies for young people—from my experiences then and now with MediaSnackers I will be preaching the paradigm shift from consultation to conversation. New media and technology has caught a lot of instituations and organisations napping and without embedding it into their policies and operations they are missing out on a huge part of youth culture.
I also believe that a 10 year strategy for young people is not credible. The world is moving at such an extreme pace it's simply isn't viable (unless it is one that is fluid in it's design and focus).
If you're going to be at the The Youth Summit come over and say hi—don't forget to check out the Summit's blog.

[SUMMARY—Quotes which illustrate.]
(WORLD) MediaSnackers are being served more and more ways to snack on their chosen media than ever. It's hard to differentiate between companies and start-ups enabling snacking or the snacking trends driving media platform development, but here are a couple of quotes from the 'experts' to sum it all up for any 'MediaSnacker-virgins':
The youth craze for making and posting digitized audio and video on the Internet - their own creations and those of others, without regard to ownership - is driving a wedge between the traditional "commercial" economy and the upstart "sharing" market.
An article exploring digital rights expectations/understandings of young people.

MediaSnackers: Show Don't Tell
[SUMMARY—A personal account of MediaSnackers.]
MediaSnackers was born early 2006 during a throw-away conversation with one of my mentors about young people, technology and the changing nature of project development (at the time I was developing community youth projects for brands and businesses as part of their corporate social responsibility agendas). I quipped, young people were "media snackers"—a response to the evolving media landscape, growing media device ownership and emerging online platforms—my mentor thought the term was a fantastic and simple definition of a generation. A few hours later I had bought the dot com with the promise to do something with it.

Jess's Insights
[SUMMARY—MediaSnackers youth liaison officer shares some insights.]
(WORLD) This week, I've been excited by quite a few things (it sounds a bit sad on reflection but I've spent the best part of a month studying for exams!). Firstly, it's surprising how many people go to the library to study for exams (I haven't been to the library in a long time). It's also surprising how many people end up chatting to their friends for hours on end, instead of doing work. (Today, I sat opposite a girl who came in with a sandwich and a cake, took out her Chemistry textbooks and talked for two hours to her friend and only managed to write a title). I'm also surprised by the girl:boy ratio that go to the library—there are quite clearly a lot more girls that study there. It's been quite an eye-opener and it made me think about how girls are constantly performing better than boys…

Happy Birthday MediaSnackers
[SUMMARY—All together now…]
(WORLD) …happy birthday to us …happy birthday to us …happy birthday dear MediaSnackers …happy birthday to us!
Woo hoo—one year old today—wow!
It's customary at points such as these to take a deep and meaningful look back at achievements and the journey, however, we prefer to take a glance: MediaSnackers was started on a throw-away conversation, grown through a fun attitude and more importantly a very fluid business plan to match the area we focus on and operate in. In one year we've established a healthy profile in terms of unique visitors to the site (up to 65,000+ a month), a beefy subscriber list for our monthly email digests (2,400+), posted a hell of a lot of weblog entries (360+), completed and gone live with a sack of podcasts (80+) and vodcasts (6), developed and delivered a bunch of sexy training sessions (20+) plus snagged a few speaking/consultancy gigs…
(Getting personal) I'm smiling when I think about these humble achievements, how the MediaSnackers family has started to grow, the other plans organically taking shape, how some people make us blush writing nice things about what we do (more on our training page) and how totally fresh this all feels, like it's just the start…
These small successes stem from two simple and dear mantras:
Nothing great was ever done alone!
Albert Einstein
If it wasn't for my family, friends, colleagues, associates, people serving cease-and-desist orders, the praise, the opportunities, the criticisms, the experiences, individuals challenging our ideas and extending the possibilities—thank you, every one of you have added to the richness of experience this past year.
And the second:
Everything we do must be kick-ass!
Me, (DK, MediaSnackers Founder)
Like I said, it feels like a beginning and I want to take this opportunity to name and thank the team here: Mark, you are an amazing training guru, zen-guide and idea-stretcher; Emily and Jess, your authentic voices and fantastic energy simply add to our credibility (good luck in the exams); Lee, for taking a chance and getting involved, you're bringing more than your aware of to the table; our new guy, Barney, for having a vision and providing the inspiration to widen our horizons; last but not least 'g', you had the experience to see the possibilities and a big enough boot to get me going—thank you all guys!
Happy Birthday us!
