(WORLD) MediaSnackers are being served more and more ways to snack on their chosen media than ever. It's hard to differentiate between companies and start-ups enabling snacking or the snacking trends driving media platform development, but here are a couple of quotes from the 'experts' to sum it all up for any 'MediaSnacker-virgins':

Media Mentoring

[SUMMARY—New youth mentoring scheme from the Media Trust.]

(UK) Funded by the DfES, a £666,000 media mentoring scheme for young people will be managed by the Media Trust.

Partnering with media players such as ITV, Channel 4, Turner, Warner Brothers, IPC Media, AOL and The Times, the scheme will offer 14 to 25 year olds at risk of antisocial behaviour personal advice and industry insights through mentoring.

Can't really see where all that money will go (apart from some admin and branding work through flyers etc) but it sounds interesting and one to keep an eye on (although there's nothing on the Media Trust website at the moment and the whole project would make a great weblog).

I'm still hoping the Trust will participate in a podcast which has been requested.

The MediaSnackers Meme #1

(WORLD) Christian Long has been a great advocate of MediaSnackers, posting about our developments and continued growth. His recent post highlighting our MediaSnackers Explained vid (which is now embedded in the front page of our site) illustrates, what I call, the 'digital-ripple effect'.

Robert Scoble is an A-list blogger. He used to work for Microsoft and was one of the first blogging behemoths (he currently works for Podtech). MediaSnackers is honoured he likes our stuff (which he picked up on Christian's blog) and especially our name:

I like that term. It's what I'm doing today. Snacking on media.

Gaming And Cinema Mash-up

[SUMMARY—An emergence of a new media form?]

(SPA) Imagine visiting your local cinema, getting your popcorn and drinks then heading off to the theatre. Although this time you're not there to passively watch but to immerse youself and participate in a video game with 50 others.

This new/old media mash-up is being tested out in Madrid and Germany and which will be coming to a threate near you soon…

Driven by the slowing down in sales at the box office these developments are seen as a great way to monetise the smaller theatres which are simply struggling.

Enrique Martinez is behind the idea for a movie theatre in Madrid, Spain:

We see the future with multiplexes with five screens, one for the traditional Hollywood spectaculars and the others for screens for video halls and 3-D. That's the next step.

UPDATE: Here in the UK there is a £3million investment into a social networking site (called Lovefilm.com) to 'boost cinema attendances for non-mainstream movies'.

Gen D (For Digitalisation)

(WORLD) Check out this free new report focussing on the technology habits and usership of 3,000 Gen Y from KPMG.

It covers many areas—such as prevalant media device ownership, online participation, shift in source for news etc.—which simply reinforce the accepted notions that 18-30 year olds are a digitalised generation.

The report obviously goes into more depth and highilghts the impact of technology on/for work enviroments and also its impact on values. Overall, simply more weight to add to the growing MediaSnackers discourse.

MediaSnackers Youth Professionals Training: 15-16/02/07

[SUMMARY—Short film review of our recent two day youth professionals training course.]

(UK) This is a short film review of a two day training course for youth professionals in London for BYC (including staff from Changemakers, Youthnet.org and TimeBank).

The MediaSnackers training workshop provided BYC staff members with crucial knowledge of various media being used today; as well as the confidence to better connect with young people of the UK on their terms and through their preferred mediums of communication. We have had nothing but positive comments back from the youth professionals who attended the workshop regarding DK and Mark, as well as the training in general.

Global Youth Survey Price-tag

(WORLD) In the MediaSnackers Podcast#57 we spoke to Emmi Kuusikko, Director of User and Market Insight for Sulake Corporation who run the online world, Habbo hotel, and discussed their global youth survey.

The survey was conducted amongst the 42.000 users of the Habbo Community and across 22 countries. Today I got an email/press release announcing the survey report is now available for purchase at 2,500EUR (1,681GBP / 3,284USD).

Phew… what a price-tag!

(WORLD) Communication is vital for everyone, but more so it seems for teenagers, with nothing better to do than talk to each other for hours on end after they've seen their friends for 6 or so hours at school! Communicating with friends has been made all the more easier through the use of a new(ish) invention called Skype. Skype allows Internet users to talk to each other through microphone, totally free of charge for an unlimited time. There has recently been a big inflow from my friends, asking if I have Skype, so I can talk to them through these means.

VOIP (voice over internet protocol) is perhaps the future of communication. Does this spell the end of the telephone? Even years ago, when mobile technology started to become more popular, many people chose to use landlines, but with the introduction of talking over the Internet, could this be on the way out? Even more so now, as nearly everybody in the UK has Internet access.

After a quick exploratory meeting with Channel 4, MediaSnackers will then be heading off to deliver our two day youth professionals training to the staff at the The British Youth Council.

(CAN/WORLD) In our culture today, more and more young people seem to know more about their computer game, than they do about a rugby game. We are the MediaSnacking generation, constantly feeding from the internet with aspects such as MSN Messenger, to indulging in a whole night of playing the Xbox. But do we as a youth culture, really want this ever growing media technology to fulfil our lives? Do we really want to be able to order a Pizza from Domino's whilst watching Sky? Or to be stuck indoors all night talking to friends on MSN?

Across the pond, Howard Waldorf School in Toronto (Canada), have asked this question, and have come up with a 'media curfew' for their students, in order to drag them away from their screens.

Young People Now Letter

(UK) On the 1st October last year I wrote a letter to UK publication Young People Now. A friend contacted me today to say it was printed and here is the text:

Understanding online trends and new media/technologies is crucial, not only for professional development but more importantly, for creating and delivering varied and impactive youth services, policies and projects. Many youth workers lack the knowledge to mak use of the many online tools, resources and platforms (most of which are free) which simply enable us to do our jobs better, faster and more dynamically.

Furthermore, many youth workers are still battling the myriad of IT filters and policies that deny them access to the many sites which could be used professionally. We need to ask ourselves: do we have the skills to enable the young people we work with to become collaborators in, not receivers of, a service? Or are we still conforming to old models, which are becoming irrelevant in the eyes of the young people we work with?

The only problem is, that's not what I entirely wrote—the publication reserves the right to edit letters before publishing, however, I put at the end of my original letter I do not give them permission to print without seeing the edited version and therefore my consent. I never saw the edited version before they printed.

My issue with the published piece is that it presents a terse view of the situation which has a negative effect on my professional profile. I think youth workers do a fantastic job with the limited resources they have and the parameters they have to do it in. I wanted to challenge but also present solutions and options.

So here, for anyone who cares, is my original letter—make up your own minds:
