The End Of TV
[SUMMARY—From one young persons perspective.]
(UK/WORLD) With new technology such as YouTube and Google Video,I'm starting to think whether it's the beginning of the end for television and VHS.
As a teenager with nothing better this summer than to sleep until 2 in the afternoon, I've spent the last few weeks reliving my childhood, watching old Pokemon episodes (Japanese anime featuring small creatures who fight against each other), instead of scrambling to Blockbuster or watching jittery old videos, it's right at my fingertips! All seasons in order on YouTube!
The new YouTube revolution means that from anywhere across the world you can access the latest videos… of practically anything. Music videos, film trailers, home movies, the list literally does trail on and on, but the question is: does this spell the end of so-called 'older technology' such as television?
As a student, you may find it quite surprising that I watch hardly any television (apart from Neighbours, which I watch religiously) but it's only because I can find exactly what I want to watch in around a minute by using YouTube's search engine. It's so easy to use and user friendly, you soon get addicted. (At present I'm up to episode 70 of season 1 of Pokemon… after starting from the beginning 2 weeks ago).
Does this also mean the end of music channels such as MTV? These channels' niche used to be previewing new music videos, however now, it's a different story! As an avid music fan, instead of switching on the TV, I log onto YouTube to find the latest videos, in perfect quality.
Now, new media experts are saying that websites such as YouTube are a major threat to television, as more and more consumers flock to the Internet to get their daily information fix.
Looking into the future, are we going to be sitting in front of our computer screens more? (More than we already are now!) Perhaps more inventions such as Sky+ and Tivo is going to be the way forward…
