MS Alumni #5: Greg Welch – e-skills UK

MediaSnackers Alumni
(GBR) The MediaSnackers Alumni are a growing number of past clients that could just disappear into the ether if we didn’t catch up with them. We decided to hunt down and grill them to find out what difference their training had made in the way they work professionally and personally. This months thoughts and insights are from Greg Welch:
What’s your role, who you work for, and what sort of things do you do?
Hi I work for e-skills UK and I manage the BigAmbition programme. We encourage more 14-19yr olds to consider technology degrees and careers by showing them the exciting potential of the industry and the variety of cool and advanced jobs on offer, please come and find us on facebook. You can follow us on twitter: @bigambition & #bigambition.
Its been a month or so since you have been drenched in the MediaSnackers ‘way’, what did you learn from the experience?
Probably the best thing I learnt is to play, explore and share as much technology and content as possible. Check out how BigAmbition came about on YouTube.
How have other members of the team/organisation, that didn’t attend the course, received your new techniques?
The whole team has picked up on the social media techniques really well and we now have a good network of friends and contacts for the programme, identifying new ideas and sharing our messages. The challenge has been to convince the rest of the company that didn’t come along to the workshop, of the value of starting social media conversations as well as demonstrating the impact of our endeavours. We are running a number of social media training sessions with the rest of the team to share the things that we learnt and our enthusiasm for all things social…
What has been the biggest and easiest change to make in the way that you work?
The biggest and most useful change has been to get in the habit of using and implementing social media tools on a daily basis—I am completely hooked now to a whole range of awesome tools that ‘slow down time’ ‘open up new audiences’ and ‘make marketing fun’.
Has there been any difficulty in implementing these new approaches?
No real difficulties—except when my hotmail was phished the other day and sent out silly messages to everyone in my address book—sorry ‘bout that.
What future projects do you have planned which utilise social media?
Every future project will use social media in some way.
Thank you for your time, Greg Welch.
